Martha Aladjem Bloomfield and Stephen Garr Ostrander present The Sweetness of Freedom: Stories of Immigrants (Okemos)
10/21/2010 6:00 pm
The Sweetness of Freedom presents an eclectic grouping of late nineteenth and twentieth-century immigrants’ narratives and the personal artifacts, historical documents, and photographs these travelers brought on their journeys to Michigan. Some of the immigrants presented here hoped to gain better education and jobs. Others fled their homelands because of war, poverty, repression, religious persecution, or ethnic discrimination. All dreamt of freedom and opportunity. Most of the oral histories in this volume are based on interviews conducted with the immigrants themselves by Martha Aladjem Bloomfield and Stephen Garr Ostrander, curator and designer respectively, for the Michigan Historical Museum exhibit Movers and Seekers: Michigan Immigrants and Migrants. Refreshments will be served as we welcome the authors and a few of the immigrants featured to share their perspectives on the book.
