This Green House Summer Event Series

Framing with Fabric
Monday, July 6 at Okemos & Wednesday, July 8 at Lansing

We’ll show you how to fancy up your old picture frames with a fun fabric mat! Be as simple or creative as you want to create the perfect frame to accent any room in your house. Bring your scraps of fabric and an old matted frame to this event (or $5.00 and we’ll provide the supplies) and learn how to take something old and make it new and unique! No sewing involved!

Knits & Pieces
Monday, July 13 at Okemos & Wednesday, July 15 at Lansing

Put those yarn scraps to use! Knitting experts Rae and Lynn of Rae’s Yarn Boutique will be on hand to show us how to make a fun summer purse out of scrap yarn! The technique we’ll learn can also be used to make washcloths, rugs, bags, and scarves! Bring your own leftover yarn (small to medium balls) and size 9 or 10 knitting needles or $5.00 and we’ll provide the supplies! Beginners are welcome and encouraged!

Worms at Work
Monday, July 20 at Okemos & Wednesday, July 22 at Lansing

Resident compost expert and bookseller Judy will be teaching us the simple steps to put together a worm composting bin! It’s easy and odor-free so you can keep it right in the house! We’ll be drawing one lucky winner to take home the ready-to-use bin made during the demonstration!

Jim Lynch Makes His Return to Grand Rapids!

On the first page of Jim Lynch’s The Highest Tide, Miles O’Malley tells us "You’d have to be a scientist, a poet, and comedian to hope to describe it all accurately, and even then you’d often fall short." It could be Jim’s modesty speaking. Or it could be a nudge in the ribs; after all, he says you have to be a comedian. But one thing’s for sure, Jim Lynch doesn’t fall short. The author of Kent County’s One Book One County pick for 2009 returns to lounge chairs and nightstands this summer with his new novel, Border Songs, featuring a hero as remarkable and memorable as Miles from The Highest Tide. Border Songs follows Brandon Vanderkool, a 6 foot 8 inch tall, dyslexic, bird enthusiast who finds work patrolling the Canadian border in Washington. Only such a job would introduce him to the seedy underbelly of his wilderness home.

The 28th Street Schuler Books & Music will be hosting a discussion and book signing session in its comfortable in-store studio with Jim Lynch on Thursday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. Come early to find a seat and visit with one of the nation’s premier authors, whose work has been called "irresistible" (Los Angeles Times) and "unforgettable" (Seattle Times). Feel free to mistake him for a scientist, a poet, or a comedian, but remember this, never count on him falling short!

Thursday, July 16 @ 7:00pm, 28th St.

Girls’ Night Out presents NYT-Bestselling Michigan author Jacqueline Carey

Join us as we celebrate the release of two new novels by bestselling fantasy author Jacqueline Carey! Naamah’s Kiss is the first book in a new alternate historical fantasy trilogy. With vividly imagined characters, sharp political observations, and compelling plotlines set against a strong Renaissance backdrop, the new series, in part an extension of the Kushiel’s Legacy series, epitomizes the classic epic fantasy. Santa Olivia is a sci-fi fantasy take on the classic werewolf myth, exploring the fascinating mind of a fearless superheroine, who quickly becomes a catalyst for hope and change. Join us for a night of free wine, women’s fiction and, of course, the grab bag book drawing!
