Mike Mullin, debut author of Ashfall, came to Schuler Books and Music in Okemos for a day of presentations last week. First we took him to Okemos High School to talk to over one hundred kids about writing and researching and then a taekwondo demonstration where Mike broke a concrete paver with his bare hands! Then we were off to Haslett high school for another presentation for another hundred students, where he again broke a concrete block! One final presentation at the bookstore in the evening, complete with the paving block breaking and we finished off a wonderful day full of spreading the word about this debut author and his amazing and adventurous book for teens! |

Thoroughly soaked from the downpour, Jim arrived to find a lively group of friends, family and fans (just as water-logged as he was) awaiting him in the Schuler Studio. After everyone was settled in, Jim invited his son, Rob, on stage to read a passage from his new memoir, Surviving My Happy Childhood. Rob had the room roaring with laughter as he read the first chapter, ‘The Cloak Room Incident’. (Something about a son reading his father’s words only made the story that much more hilarious.) Jim rounded out the evening by reading from his book and having a very casual conversation with the crowd about growing up and coming of age in West Michigan. |

On Saturday, July 31, Donald Lystra, author of Season of Water and Ice, was on hand at the 28th St Schuler Books where he greeted fans and signed copies of his new title. Season of Water and Ice is the unforgettable story of two young people confronting life during a tumultuous few months of 1957. Faces of Dignity is a collection of photographs and cultural stories from around the world, with over 100 full color photos by Jeff DeKock and 14 accompanying tales by Paul Christians and Jeff DeKock. Faces of Dignity is about taking a different look at poverty issues by finding and celebrating human dignity even in the most unexpected places. |

"The First Annual Zombie Party" held at Schuler of Lansing on October 27 was a huge hit! With a Zombie Dance Party in the Chapbook Cafe, a Zombie Gaming Area, Zombie film screening and the unveiling of the Zombie Darkroom Pin-up Photos by Lansing photographer Jena Mcshane, there was something for everyone who loves Zombies! It all culminated in the costume contest, which was won by Kerry Cripe for a fabulously gory zombie get-up, but high marks were earned by the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Zombie couple and the "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" Jane Austen Zombie, as well as Bobble- headed Zombies and even Zombie Princesses! |
