Great-Grandma's Trunk

It is 1869 and the Pequegnats are immigrating to America, leaving behind family and friends and the only home they have ever known in the small, French speaking village of Loveresse, Switzerland. The reader follows eight-year-old  Emma over the storm tossed Atlantic, and shares her fright and anxiety on her first day of school in Elgin, Illinois. More adventures follow when they travel in a covered wagon, pulled by oxen, to their new home in Michigan.

The Victorian period is colorfully described  through Emma as she finds romance, elopes with her handsome boyfriend, Fred Schultheiss, and they settle on a small farm near St.Louis, Michigan.
