Next Year: Hope in the Dust by Ruth VanderZee is a poignant story of loss, hope, heartbreak, and resiliance. Tender poetic text tells the story of the devastating Dust Bowl on the Great Plains in the early 1940's and how 12-year-old Calvin endured, forever changed by his experience. The masterful Gary Kelley provides exquisite illustration. Proving once again that illustrated books are not for children alone, Next Year is a lovely work worthy of immediate inclusion in home and school libraries everywhere.
